James Davis exhibition work shows a commitment to figurative, expressionist art and social comment. ‘He is arguably Australia’s foremost living force in the world of Surrealism. Embracing societal scars and whims of fantasy, rampant and verdant nature and the flames of apocalypse, James Davis exhibition takes no prisoners with his paintings.’ Dr. Ashley Crawford, journalist on art and culture for The Age, The Australian, The Financial Review, Australian Art Collector and numerous other magazines.
This online exhibition is a small selection from James’ studio across his different series of paintings ranging from the Botanica Series, to the Edinburgh Gardens and the Bohemian Series, as well as earlier paintings.
Included are also works developed in the manner of Vincent Van Gogh. ‘In convalescing after a serious illness, I read a book about Van Gogh inspiring me to interpret his language in a series of small paintings. Therefore, what is in these works is not a deliberate act of plagiarism, but a simple inspirational moment that is meant as a tribute to, not a copy of Van Gogh.’ JD 2005
